The Butterfly Lovers
and The Yellow River Piano Concerto
The Butterfly Lovers, or Liang Zhu, is a Chinese legend about
the tragic romance between two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.
The piece with the name of the legend has been the most musically
symbolic retelling of the legend. At almost 30 minutes long, it
is one of the classics of modern Chinese music. The Yellow River
Piano Concerto, together with the violin concerto Liang, are the
two best internationally known musical works that combined source
materials that are purely Chinese with Western music methodology.
